Koup Train Station
The 'Koup' refers to the southern districts of the Great Karoo, traversed by the N1 highway between Cape Town and Johannesburg. Travelling east from the Hex River Valley, the countryside quickly becomes arid and seemingly barren, with vast stretches of uninhabited semi-desert stretching to all horizons. Despite the area's arid appearance there is a surprisingly abundant supply of underground water, brought to the surface by the windmills which dot the plains.
